American Eagle Platinum
American Eagle Platinum coins from the United States Mint are among the most overlooked modern issues. As an ironic result, they also offer some of the greatest numismatic potential to be found in contemporary investment coins.
Currently the Mint strikes a one-ounce $100 issue each year, and a corresponding proof issue. Fractional issues were struck from 1997 to 2008, and are worthy of attention from today’s investor/collectors: Many feature low to very low mintage, and populations of graded MS-69 and MS-70 specimens can be especially small. Striking these coins presents a challenge to the Mint because of platinum’s exceptional hardness, and relatively fewer specimens may grade at the highest tiers.
Once the most expensive of the precious metals, platinum has fetched well over $2,000 an ounce in years, nearly three times its price in 2019. Supply, demand, and cyclical markets are likely to push platinum back to the head of the pack at some point.
All of this points to a strong recommendation for all Platinum Eagles, and especially for low mintage, low population previous date issues. Many meet our standards for recommended coins: Low mintage, low populations graded by NGC/PCGS, and high MS-69 and MS-70 grade. We also have specimens with certificates hand-signed by Edmund C. Moy, which elevates them to the highest level of recommendation we can make. Most dates have Moy-signed populations below 20 coins. Some may have a single coin or even zero populations!
