American Eagle Silver
If you’re like most people, you’ll be surprised to learn there are modern-issue silver dollars worth thousands of dollars. A 1999 coin in pristine condition can fetch $23,000 according to current NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) price guides. Out of millions of coins produced, only a small number are submitted to grading services like NGC, and even fewer earn a perfect MS70 grade. Those specimens can soar in value over time.
The United States Mint has produced the silver dollar in its current form, the American Eagle Silver Dollar, since 1986. Today there are five dates that will command prices above $5,000 when certified as an MS70 specimen by NGC.
Humble Beginnings
Each of these started out as a simple, one-ounce bullion coin, selling for a small premium above the prevailing price of silver, which has traded at values between $14 and $21 in recent years. Today a Silver Eagle that has been pre-screened by Global Gold USA and submitted to NGC, certified to be a flawless MS70 specimen, can be yours for well under $100.
No one can know when the next $5,000+ silver dollar will emerge, but we keep a close eye on U.S. Mint production numbers. Relative scarcity is the best predictor of increased value, and when we see that projected annual mintage numbers are low we recommend and seek to place those coins in our clients’ portfolios.
Beyond Flawless: Elite Pedigrees and Designations
What’s better than a perfect, certified MS70 coin specimen? An Early Releases or First Strikes designation can be included on grade certificates for coins delivered by the Mint during the first 30 days of release. Even better, how about a First Day of Issue specimen? These designations can add to your coin’s profit potential, and we make them available to our clients whenever possible.
Signature Coinage - A New Standard
In recent years leading grading services NGC and PCGS have begun to offer grading that includes an encapsulated grade certificate signed by an important Mint or government official. These luminaries include John Mercanti, former U.S. Mint Chief Engraver, or Mike Castle, known as “The Coinage Congressman” for his role in securing authorization of many beloved modern coin programs. Edmund C. Moy, the 38th Director of the United States Mint, stands as the most elite and most sought name in signature coinage. We are proud to specialize in Moy signature coinage, and offer a range of signed coins that few other dealers can match.
