United States Mint Modern Coins

The modern era of United States gold and silver coins began in 1986. Congress authorized the issue of new investor coins, representing the first legal tender gold coins to be released from the Mint since the government recall of gold in 1933. Gold and Silver Eagle coins would later be joined by a platinum series in 1997. In 2006 The American Buffalo Gold program was launched to answer public demand for a 24-karat coin, a standard becoming popular among other world mints. Other programs have been added along the way, including the America the Beautiful silver series, beginning in 2010 and set to run until 2021.

US Mint Eagle coins quickly became the world’s preferred investment coins due to the trust in and the reliability of American money and financial instruments. Eagle and Buffalo coins are legal tender United States issues, with weight and purity guaranteed by the United States Treasury. This status affords them some unique advantages, including limited IRS reporting and eligibility for inclusion in IRA trust accounts.
